Apple CarPlay: New Car Technology

If you love your iPhone, then you’ll love Apple CarPlay — a system that mirrors your iPhone’s functionality on your car’s infotainment system. It’s a new feature that’s available on a wide range of new models including Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram vehicles.

How It Works

Here’s how it works: Plug in your phone with a USB cord and tap the CarPlay icon. You’ll immediately see the familiar Apple interface on the car’s touchscreen. You control CarPlay using the car’s touchscreen, Siri voice commands, steering-wheel controls or traditional knobs and buttons.

The system works well with directions, and we think the maps function is a good replacement for most in-car navigation systems. As for keeping in touch, the system can play voicemails and read or reply to text messages — all via voice command.

Apple CarPlay also gives you lots of options for accessing your favorite music, podcasts and audiobooks, allowing you to call up a playlist, listen to a favorite song on iTunes or call up a popular app such as Pandora, Spotify or Audible.

With its many safety benefits and easy-to-use interface, look for CarPlay to show up on more and more new vehicles.

Drawbacks

Apple’s CarPlay feature isn’t perfect. We do like it but there are a few drawbacks. First, you need a cable. CarPlay doesn’t work without a hardwire connection to the car. The similar system for Android users (called Android Auto) does not need a wired connection. One thing we dislike about this setup is that finding an Apple Lightning cable has become our new hobby and is not fun. Second, the system can freeze or get confused. If you try to do too many things very quickly, the system can freeze or stop working for a few seconds. Lastly, you need a strong cellular signal to keep features like Pandora and Apple maps working well and properly.

While all new technology options are not without a few hiccups in the beginnig we know that the good outweigh the bad and the hiccups will certainly be worked out as technology continutes to improve.

Apple Is Getting Very Serious About The Whole Car Thing

A couple of years ago, Apple announced its intention to dominate dashboardsvia the CarPlay infotainment system. To most observers, CarPlay seemed like an interesting move but not much of a stretch for Apple. After all, plenty of drivers already used their iPhones for music and navigation, so why not bake those features directly into cars?

Back in February, however, rumors began circulating that Apple had bigger plans for the auto world — plans that involved building its own autonomous cars. Soon afterward, we heard reports of a secret research lab and claims that Apple was poaching experienced battery designers. The company’s goals were becoming clearer: Apple was gunning for next-gen manufacturers of electric, self-driving cars like Tesla.

The only thing in this narrative that’s remained a bit unclear has been how serious Apple is about its car project. Is it iPhone serious, or is it AppleTV serious?

Based on recent news, it’s iPhone serious.

That news involved Apple’s hiring of Doug Betts, formerly the head of global quality at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. As you can see from Betts’ resume, he’s spent nearly 30 years in the auto industry, and he’s always been focused on improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process and the quality of products.

What will Betts be doing at Apple? His profile simply says that he’s in “Operations”, which could mean anything. But it would be a little strange for Apple to hire such a dedicated auto industry guy with extensive production credentials and not use him to produce automobiles. If, for example, Apple wanted to tighten up production of smartphones or watches, surely there are people better than Betts for such jobs.

So, to recap, for those who had lingering doubts, Apple is getting very serious about producing cars.

Mopar Owner Apps Upgraded

The various Mopar/Chrysler apps for owners have been upgraded. Mopar was the first in the industry to launch smartphone apps for customers, for 2011 model-year cars and trucks, but these were fairly rudimentary, mainly being an on-line reference source with relatively minimal information.

Now, both iPhone/iPod/iPad and Android owners can have richer apps, with general information, service history, recall notices, and other features.

Owners can scan and identify instrument panel icons using their phones, see videos and how-to information, and log and track vehicle mileage or monitor a Mopar Vehicle Protection plan. The company can also push maintenance offers, recall alerts, and tricks and tips to customers.

An enhanced Parking Reminder feature lets owners set a pin at their parking location and a timer for the meter, and providing walking directions back. This is a nice setup but probably easier to use as part of a standalone app, due to the clunky menu system.

There are also dealership connections to see coupons, find dealers, schedule test drives, and get quotes.

A new Accident Assistant, a first for automakers, lets owners create accident records, upload insurance information, and capture photos of the scene, then find a certified collision repair facility and schedule an appointment to ensure their vehicle is repaired using original equipment parts. (The Assistant also lets owners access Roadside Assistance.)

The Apps work for various 2011-2015 model year cars and trucks, and are available in English and Spanish. The titles on the Apple Store are Mopar Owner’s Companion, Chrysler Concierge (incorrectly listed in the press release as Chrysler Owner’s Companion), Drive Dodge, Jeep Vehicle Owners, Ram Toolbox, and My FIAT.
