The Jeep Wrangler Pickup Is Happening And This Is It

You’ve screamed, hollered, yelled and begged and now here it is: the 2017 Jeep Wangler pickup. Here’s the proof.

Yes, this is a very camo-ed prototype, but it is the real thing. It is no longer an abstract idea or a series of flying rumors. It occupies this earth with us.

We’re quite certain that it will keep the body-on-frame construction. Aluminum may or may not be off the table. Maybe there will be a hybrid?

Nissan Rogue Hybrid Might Migrate to the U.S.

A Nissan Rogue hybrid? Sounds like a vehicle that would win the blessing of Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn, who is known to be very bullish on battery electric cars taking over the industry. Lending more specific credence to the rumor, a Japanese engineer just told Automotive News that Nissan may give us a Rogue hybrid. Are your electrons getting excited, crossover buyers?

The suggestion comes from Nobusuke Toukura, chief engineer for the new X-Trail Hybrid, the overseas Rogue built on the same platform, which was just introduced in Japan last week. When we asked Nissan USA about the prospect, the company wouldn’t confirm Toukura’s claim outright, but did say that it would like to add more hybrids beyond the Pathfinder Hybrid to its lineup. Since the Rogue is Nissan’s second best-selling model and Toyota has just unwrapped the RAV4 Hybrid, a Rogue hybrid seems like a no-brainer. From a production standpoint, a Rogue hybrid would be easy to add to the Smyrna, Tennessee line that already rolls out Rogues and Pathfinders.

Like the Pathfinder Hybrid, the X-Trail Hybrid eschews the typical two-motor setup—a generator to charge its lithium-ion battery and a traction motor to put down the power—and instead employs two electronic clutches that perform both duties, with one separating the engine and the motor. On the X-Trail Hybrid, Nissan pairs a 40-hp electric motor with a 2.0-liter 145-hp four-cylinder, optional all-wheel drive, and claims 47 mpg on Japan’s highly unrealistic JC08 cycle. It’s hard to say how that combo would do in EPA testing but at the very least we could expect a significantly higher rating than the Pathfinder Hybrid’s 25/27 mpg city/highway.

Even with gas prices in a welcome lull, Nissan needs volume to become noticed in this space, and the future hybridized GT-R is not going to do it. The last-gen Altima Hybrid, which used a Toyota-licensed powertrain, was short-lived, relatively inefficient, and only available in 10 states. And while the Nissan Leaf leads the plug-in market, the automaker sells the fewest hybrids of all its competitors. Combined with its three Infiniti models (Q50, QX60, and Q70), Nissan sold fewer than 8000 hybrids in 2014. Ford shipped more than 9.5 times that number. Even Subaru, which offers only the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, managed to outsell Nissan and Infiniti in its very first year. Get to it, Ghosn.

Grand Cherokee diesel on the road

While it’s been neglected by most people in favor of the Ram 1500 diesel, the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel was the first Chrysler vehicle sold in North America to have the VM 3.0 V6 engine.  We tested this briefly at a Chelsea, Michigan test track, and found it to be instantly responsive, more so than the Hemi — which has far better acceleration numbers, but doesn’t respond quite as quickly to the throttle.

Chrysler has dabbled in diesels as a non-hybrid solution to large fuel-economy boosts, but applications have been limited so far partly due to cheap gasoline and high premiums for diesel engines. The diesel, which uses compression rather than spark to ignite fuel, is much more expensive to build, partly due to the extremely high pressures involved, and partly because of the need to control small particles in the exhaust which have been reliably and consistently linked to cancer. The current popular methods of dealing with emissions controls are diesel emissions fluid (DEF) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

The company may be able to add more diesels soon, if the next generation VM and Fiat four cylinders prove to be suitable. A Fiat 3-liter four-cylinder is due to appear soon on the ProMaster van, for example, though this has been deemed unsuitable for “civilian” cars.

It’s worth noting that diesels tend to have less of a fuel economy reduction when towing or carrying heavy loads than gasoline engines.

Diesels and minivan hybrids

Sergio Marchionne said that the first production Chrysler hybrids would be minivans; and that Windsor had not yet been selected as the factory which will build them. Windsor “has one of the best workforces around,” but with over a billion dollars of investment needed, the company is still depending on negotiations with the Canadian government before making a final decision.

The first one out will be a Chrysler. “What comes out as a Dodge, I’m not willing to answer.”

The company loses around $14,000 on each Fiat 500e electric car it sells, but needed to develop the technology.

For diesels, the main challenge is the additional cost. The company is focusing on the largest, heaviest vehicles, because those tend to have the largest benefits. “The benefit of diesel will probably run its course through about 2018” unless they can reduce the emissions cost-effectively. The company is working on emissions reductions.

Nissan Getting Greener Every Day

It really is amazing how quickly the auto industry is changing. Just a few years ago gas was in the mid-$1 range and now with it over $4 per gallon everyone is turning to hybrids and alternate forms of fuel. I found a couple of articles that I thought I would share with you all.

Today New York City Mayor Bloomberg will hold a press conference to give an update on the city’s five year plan to create an all hybrid fleet of taxis. Nissan has been donating 200 Altima Hybrids a month to help out. They are by far the biggest contributor to the program. If you’re interested in purchasing a Hybrid Altima when they become available in Michigan in the next couple years you may want to go to New York and hail a tax ride in one. In other parts of the world, Nissan unveiled it’s first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle yesterday at Imperial College London. The vehicle is a 4×4 X-Trail which is not available in the United States, however, they are available in Canada. I’m sure they will put this technology in US vehicles when it is ready. According to the article, the emission free vehicle only emits a few drops of water for every 300 miles it travels. This model is 40 per cent more efficient than previous models but will probably not be available until after 2015 due to high production costs.
