Exclusive: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica prices

Trusted source Moparian sent the starting prices for the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica to Allpar, and they seem to be in line with current Chrysler minivans, though above the stripped-down Dodges. Bargain hunters can keep getting Caravans for another year, at least.

The base Pacifica LX will start at $28,595, a reasonable price given its standard features and advanced design. Buyers who step up to the Touring will pay just $1,900 more. The Touring L pushes the bar up to $34,495; the L Plus, to $37,895; and the Limited Platinum, the top of the line minivan with its own built in vacuum, will top the charts at $42,495. By comparison, the Town & Country LX starts at $29,995, with the Town & Country Limited Platinum topping the range at $40,645. The Pacifica Limited Platinum contains more content, in addition to having a much more advanced suspension, upgraded seats, and a new suspension with a nine-speed automatic. Thus, there does not seem to be a true price increase to move from the old minivans to the new ones, looking at comparable models and ignoring incentives.

Over at Dodge, the Caravan starts at $22,095 for the American Value Package, with the more popular SXT starting at $27,795.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica: The new Chrysler minivan

The debut of the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica marks a lot more than a name change and a new, sixth-generation version of Chrysler’s minivans.

For one, it’s the first minivan on the U.S. market to get a plug-in hybrid version, the Pacifica Hybrid, which will offer 30 miles of pure electric driving on a charge. Secondly, it signals a new direction for these vans—not just in their far more flamboyant styling, but in a package that for the first time won’t be essentially mimicked with a Dodge version.

The Grand Caravan and its sliding side doors on the way out, to be replaced this next year by a model that’s expected to offer comparable three-row seating and space but characteristically brawnier Dodge styling and hinged rear doors.

Last week at the Detroit Auto Show we caught up with Tim Kuniskis, the North American head of passenger-car brands for Dodge, SRT, Chrysler, and Fiat, for some more details. And while he wouldn’t reveal any more information about the Grand Caravan’s replacement, found out a lot more about the how and why the Pacifica took the form it did.

Chrysler minivans winnowed down to one—Pacifica

“It’s going to be ultimately the only minivan in the portfolio, going head-to-head against a long list of mainstream competitors,” said Kuniskis. “So making sure we had all the right package and content, and being able to price this vehicle… you’ll see that we’ll be lined up well against our competitors in the segment.”

The Pacifica is built on what’s called the RU platform. The RU vehicles don’t share any likeness, components, or geometric “hard points” with the RT predecessors, which arrived in 2008; and it’s not related to the “short wide” platform that underpins the Jeep Cherokee, among others.

It was entirely developed by Chrysler’s U.S. engineering team, with scalability and the easy addition of all-wheel drive in mind, and it can apply to cars, vans, or SUVs, down to compact (D) size.

Kiniskis says that the team wanted to overcome the “mental image of a minivan,” and decided on the name change from Town & Country to Pacifica “because as we moved through the development of the vehicle we realized that this is a complete, revolutionary change.”

Not the first time Pacifica has signaled a sea change

Reviving the nameplate might not be a positive to everyone, as the previous Pacifica did suffer from some quality issues—such as transmission woes—but it was noteworthy in design, as one of the first SUVs to undergo a rather revolutionary change, pitting it against the Lexus RX in some respects. Even today, Kuniskis says, they found that the name has “good consideration and awareness.”

The spark for emphasizing design this time around came in part from the strong (and mostly positive) reception of the Chrysler 700C Concept from four years ago, which was an early test of the waters for more radical change. Then, Chrysler then wasn’t sure what kind of reception the van might get from the press, and thus revealed it in “stealth mode,” quietly unveiling it on the auto-show stand, without a conference or immediate press release.

“We kind of tested the boundaries of how far can you push the design of a minivan [with the 700C],” Kuniskis said. “From that stage, we took several design concepts out to research, and invited several CUV and minivan intenders to come out and see it. At the end of the day, he says, the takeaway message was that they wanted a stylish vehicle but didn’t want to compromise on the space and comfort of a minivan.

“We pushed the design as far as we could,” he added.

A new opportunity with Millennials

Putting more emphasis on design and technology also goes over well with Millennials, who are having kids and looking for family vehicles—and in many cases, entering the vehicle market for the first time, without the preconceptions that Gen X parents had about minivans.

The automaker clearly has some big sales hopes for the Pacifca. Chrysler is targeting as many sales as for the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country combined—or about 190,000 sales this past year, when they were down somewhat as the result of four months of assembly plant retooling.

On the Chrysler side, the next big step is building the brand, Kuniskis concedes. “You know when you look for well-defined brands in the marketplace, it’s either a product attribute that helps people define the brand, or it’s an emotional, aspirational connection that helps people want to connect with that brand,” he said.

“On Dodge we have product plus bad-boy attitude; we’ve got to do a better job identifying a product attribute and an emotional connection for Chrysler, and that’s our next job.”

Fiat Chrysler says new Pacifica minivan is ‘monumental leap’

DETROIT — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to dramatically redefine the minivan category with its new Chrysler Pacifica and a plug-in hybrid version — two models with enough fresh styling and performance to potentially re-energize a segment that has lost more than half its sales the past 15 years.

The minivan will be formally unveiled Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The automaker is surprising the industry by dropping Town & Country — a name that has helped it retain its position as the king of minivans for the better part of 25 years — and reviving the Pacifica name. The automaker eventually plans to phase out the Dodge Grand Caravan, too.

“Sure, it is absolutely risky to change the name, but that’s how confident we are,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat. “We wanted to change the name so that you think, ‘this is new, this is fresh, I need to check this out and forget the perception that I had about the previous minivan.’ ”

A new look

The Pacifica ushers in a completely new look that hides its sliding doors and doesn’t even appear to be a minivan at first glance.

“This is a fairly monumental leap. This is no evolutionary change,” said Dave Sullivan, an auto analyst for Auto Pacific who also is a minivan owner. “Inside, the materials … and buttons, switches all feel very nice and very high quality, and they really have gone all-in on rear-seat entertainment.”

Sullivan said it’s clear that the automaker poured every ounce of energy it could into developing a new design and packing the new minivan with innovations that will allow Chrysler to leapfrog the competition for several years.

The Pacifica is equipped with a redesigned 3.6-liter, V-6 Pentastar engine that produces 287 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The new engine is lighter and increases the gas compression, leading better fuel economy when combined with a nine-speed transmission, Kuniskis said.

The hybrid version will get up to 80 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in city driving. It will be the only plug-in hybrid on the market when it goes on sale later this year. The minivan will go up to 30 miles on electric power when fully charged. When the battery’s energy is depleted, the Pacifica Hybrid becomes a part-time electric vehicle, like a conventional hybrid.

Analysts say the decision to develop a hybrid minivan makes a lot of sense because of the driving habits of minivan owners, and the size of the vehicle offers a lot of space to store the batteries.

“It’s an opportunity because the typical minivan owner — their daily commute is about 30 miles. They take kids to school, run errands, go back home,” said Bruce Velisek director of the Chrysler brand.

The trick will be ensuring it remains affordable. The automaker hasn’t announced pricing for either version.

A plug-in hybrid minivan

The development of a plug-in hybrid minivan was a major undertaking for the automaker, which is woefully behind the competition when it comes to hybrids and electric vehicles. While competitors including Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Toyota aggressively developed and launched a hybrid and electric cars, Fiat Chrysler held back.

The automaker launched an electric version of the Fiat 500 in 2013 but does not sell a conventional hybrid. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid but will simply be marketed as a hybrid, Kuniskis said.

“Customers in this segment buy on functionality. They don’t buy on the technology side of the business, so they’re not really concerned about how it works as long as it works and does exactly what they need it to do,” Kuniskis said.

The Pacifica Hybrid’s battery is located under the second-row floor, keeping the rear cargo area as roomy as ever and preserving the third-row Stow ‘n Go seating and storage.

When the battery is depleted the van becomes a part-time electric vehicle, like a conventional hybrid. The battery can be fully recharged in two hours using a 240-volt plug-in system.

The exterior and interior design of Pacifica is a giant leap forward for the automaker that will put it ahead of its main rivals — the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna — said Dave Sullivan, auto analyst for AutoPacific.

The goal was to create a minivan that looks more like a crossover than a van and that has sculpted curves and sexy lines to overcome the stigma attached to minivans.

“We are not trying to say it’s not a minivan, all we are trying to say is it’s so new, so different and so much of a game changer in that segment that we wanted to change the name so that you think, ‘this is new, this is fresh, I need to check this out,’ and forget the perception about the previous minivan,” Kuniskis said.

The original Pacifica was introduced in 2003 as a three-row crossover that Chrysler produced for four years. At the time, the Pacifica was viewed as an innovative cross between a minivan, SUV and sedan.

However, it struggled with quality issues and some thought it lacked power. It was one of several models the automaker discontinued as losses mounted and the Great Recession began pushing the company toward Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

But Sullivan said starting fresh with the Pacifica name gives the automaker a chance to recast its pricing formula for its minivans.

In recent years, the Dodge Grand Caravan was the automaker’s lower-priced van, with starting prices ranging from $22,000 to $31,000, while Town & Country is priced from $30,000 to $41,000.

By renaming its minivan the Pacifica, the automaker can set a new pricing structure.

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica will be available in six models when it goes on sale this spring while the Pacifica Hybrid will come in two models when it arrives during the second half of 2016.

With the Pacifica, Fiat Chrysler also is doubling down on entertainment.

The Pacifica includes two 10-inch Uconnect screens for rear seat entertainment. Passengers can watch movies, play built-in games, connect personal devices to surf the Internet and stream content throughout the vehicle.

“We think kids are going to love it — even more than they do today,” Kuniskis said.

New 2017 Chrysler minivan spy shots

The Windsor, Ontario plant that builds all Chrysler and Dodge minivans is currently down for a thorough refitting, which will clear out ancient equipment and presumably use all available space when the minivan line is complete: standard, plug-in hybrid, and crossover (some believe a large car will also be added, as the Volkswagen Touareg shared with the Volkswagen Phaeton).

In the meantime, Chrysler appears to still be running prototypes built in their Auburn Hills shop, anticipating the time when real pilots can run down the Windsor lines for a few months for testing before the all-important vans are made.

Chrysler, inventor of the modern minivan, is still the sales leader for the first four months of 2015, but it has increasingly relied on cheap versions, discounts, and fleet sales, while Toyota and Honda cherry-pick the high-end sales. The new version will, according to Sergio Marchionne, have a fully independent suspension, an all wheel drive option, and a plug-in hybrid option, and is extremely likely to have a crossover relation. Naming has not yet been announced, but many observers expect that we will see a Chrysler Caravan with a high-end Town & Country trim level, duplicating the current lineup but without diluting Dodge’s new muscle-car image.

Allpar now believes that the minivan will use the Chrysler 200 V6 nine-speed powertrain, with some rumors claiming there will also be a turbo four (possibly with the hybrid, so there is always torque available). The minivan is reportedly based on a stretched CUSW platform, and should start at $26,000 with lower or no rebates. We expect the exterior dimensions to remain about the same.

New Platinum, LX minivans

For 2015, Chrysler will add new minivans to both the top and the bottom of the price charts.

A new Limited Platinum actually lowers the top starting price of Chrysler minivans to $40,990, including destination. It includes everything in the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country Limited, but adds a power folding third row seat and the power sunroof — at less than the price of the 2014 Limited.

At the bottom end, the LX (late availability) will match the Caravan R/T’s starting price of $30,990. The Touring, S, and Touring-L continue essentially unchanged, at $31,760, $33,990, and $35,460, respectively (including destination).

Dodge Caravan starts at $21,890. The Chrysler models come with many features standard, and more elaborate interior and exterior styling. Both share a six-speed automatic and 3.6 liter V6 gasoline engine.
