Ram 1500 Named 2020 Green Truck of the Year™ by Green Car Journal

Green Car Journal has named the Ram 1500 as its 2020 Green Truck of the Year™. The announcement was made today at the 51st annual San Antonio Auto & Truck Show in San Antonio, Texas.

The Ram 1500’s all-new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel leads the half-ton pickup truck segment in torque with 480 lb.-ft. and diesel towing capability of 12,560 pounds. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel also leads all trucks in fuel range. Paired with an available 33-gallon fuel tank, Ram’s driving range exceeds 1,000 miles.

“The all-new EcoDiesel engine and our eTorque mild-hybrid V-6 Pentastar and V-8 HEMI® engines offer Ram 1500 customers multiple fuel-efficient powertrain choices,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “We are honored to receive the Green Truck of the Year award, affirming our commitment to powertrain technology leadership in the truck segment.” Green Car Journal editors consider all potential truck models in the U.S. market, weighing environmental attributes alongside traditional criteria that define what makes a great pickup, such as capability, versatility, safety, value and style. The winner was selected from five finalists by a Green Truck of the Year jury, comprised of automotive experts and Green Car Journal staff.

“The Ram 1500 stands out in the pickup field, not only with its exclusive use of eTorque mild-hybrid technology, but also with a more powerful EcoDiesel engine that’s EPA rated up to 32 highway mpg,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and “That kind of fuel efficiency – and attendant carbon emissions reduction – is particularly impressive in a pickup offering the great functionality, recreational and work capabilities, and overall driving enjoyment of the Ram 1500. Its distinction as the 2020 Green Truck of the Year™ is well deserved.”

New for 2020, the third generation of the turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 delivers increased torque and horsepower, along with superb fuel economy and minimal levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to meet the needs of Ram 1500 owners. In the 2020 Ram 1500, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is rated at a best-in-class 480 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm, a 14 percent increase from the previous-generation EcoDiesel V-6 that peaks 400 rpm earlier. Horsepower increases 8 percent to 260 hp at 3,600 rpm. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available in all models and configurations, including a first-time offering in the Ram Rebel.

2020 Jeep® Gladiator’s new axles provide greater capability

The all-new 2020 Jeep® Gladiator entered the midsize truck market with a lot of anticipation and unmatched capability.

Enthusiasts have been clamoring for a Jeep truck for years, with the intensity increasing following the release of the new Jeep Wrangler. But before the Gladiator was introduced, Jeep engineers made sure it was most capable on the market.

One of the Gladiator’s features that allows it to deliver legendary off-road capability is the advanced 4×4 systems.

2020 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon

The Command-Trac 4×4 system, which is standard on Sport and Overland models, features a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a 3.73 rear axle ratio.

On the Gladiator Rubicon, a Rock-Trac 4×4 system features heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 front and rear axle ratio is standard as are Tru-Lok locking differentials.

“To meet the payload requirements, we went to the heavy-duty Dana 44 axles,” said Pete Milosavlevski, chief engineer.

The standard heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear solid axles on the Gladiator also have extra-thick tubes and forgings for additional strength, rigidity and durability.

“One of the most common questions consumers have asked us over the last few years has been, ‘Will you please offer a Jeep Wrangler diesel?’ I’m pleased to answer that with a resounding ‘Yes!,’” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand – North America. “I recently drove the new Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel on the Rubicon Trail and can unquestionably attest to its incredible off-road capability. Combining that unmatched off-road capability with the vehicle’s fun-to-drive on-road performance, best-ever Wrangler fuel economy and incredible driving range underwrite the fact that our customers knew exactly what they were asking for.”

2020 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon EcoDiesel

This is the first time a diesel-powered Wrangler has been offered in North America and it will be available in four-door EcoDiesel models of the Wrangler Sport, Sahara and Rubicon.

These Wranglers will be powered by the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine, rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque, with engine stop-start (ESS) technology standard.

To handle greater torque loads, the EcoDiesel V-6 connects to a newly added TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission, calibrated for low RPM shifts and the on- and off-road rigors of Jeep Wrangler duty.

There are more than 40 individual shift maps to optimize shift points for fuel economy, performance and 4×4 capability.
