Building the 2020 Jeep® Gladiator is a point of pride for Toledo Assembly Complex employees

Building the all-new 2020 Jeep® Gladiator continues a decades-long, interconnected relationship between the city of Toledo and the Jeep® brand.

For nearly 80 years, Jeep vehicles have been built in Toledo, and that’s a point of pride for the women and men who build the Gladiator in the south plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex.

While these highly skilled workers have worked for FCA for anywhere from a few years to a few decades, they all have an appreciation for their place in the long history with the Jeep brand and Toledo.

This is true for Codey Simpson who was born and raised in the Toledo area. He initially worked on the Jeep Wrangler, which is built in the north plant, before moving to the Gladiator decking area.

“I get to say I am part of it,” Simpson proudly states about building the Gladiator. “Going through this whole process is just a dream come true for me.”

Michael Carroll has been with Jeep for six years and is impressed with the new Gladiator.

“It’s one of the best vehicles I’ve seen in a long time with all the different options that are available,” he said. “This is the only truck that you are ever going to find with a top that comes off, doors that can be removed and a windshield you can drop down to experience all the freedom of a topless truck.”

Team leader Jack Mullins has worked on a variety of Jeep models over his more than 30 years working at the Toledo Assembly Complex.

“It’s a wonderful feeling being part of the Toledo crew,” said Mullins, who is impressed by the Gladiator. “The technology and four-wheel-drive capability of the Gladiator can’t be beat.”

Truck Thursday: 2020 Jeep® Gladiator designed with off-road capability in mind

The all-new 2020 Jeep® Gladiator was designed to conquer any terrain and be “The Most Off-Road Capable Midsize Pickup Truck Ever.”

Jeep designers and engineers were able to achieve this off-road distinction by putting Gladiator through a series of grueling tests and conquering those challenges thanks to a number of features that protect vital components on the midsize truck.

Some of these features are obvious, such as the 11.1 inches of ground clearance between the underside of the Gladiator Rubicon model and the terrain below.

2020 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon

On the driver’s side of each Gladiator is a Trail Rated badge that states the vehicle came out victorious against a series of tests in five key categories: traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation and ground clearance.

Then there are the rock rails on the Gladiator, which aren’t as conspicuous as the badge or height, but still play an important role.

Underneath the Gladiator, and hidden from plain sight, are high-strength steel skid plates to protect the underbody. These skid plates are featured on all Gladiators and cover key components like the transfer case and fuel tank from hazards on the trails.

2020 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon

Gladiator Rubicon models are equipped with protective cab and cargo bed rock rails.

These are just some of the off-road features available on the Gladiator. To learn more about these and others on the all-new Gladiator, visit Jeep.com.

Vehicle Escape Tools: Know what type of glass your windows are made of…

Car Escape Tool is a Lifesaver – in the Right Situation

AAA research report finds car escape tools effective in breaking tempered windows, not laminated

The idea of being trapped anywhere can cause a rush of panic and anxiety. But, imagine being trapped in a car that is either upside down or sinking in water. A scenario like this is unthinkable. Luckily, these types of accidents are rare – in 2017 there were an estimated 8,000 crashes where a vehicle became partially or fully submerged – in comparison, motorists experienced rollover crashes more than 10 times more frequently. The key to surviving an event like this, or any emergency, is to remain calm, have a plan in place and keep a car escape tool in the vehicle at all times. Tested car escape tools did not shatter laminated glass

To help consumers make an educated decision when purchasing a car escape tool, AAA examined six tools to determine how effective they are in breaking tempered and laminated glass. During testing, AAA researchers found that only four of the tools were able to shatter the tempered glass and none were able to break the laminated glass, which stayed intact even after being cracked. During multiple rounds of testing, it was also discovered that the spring-loaded tools were more successful in breaking tempered windows than the hammer-style. More new cars have laminated side windows

AAA’s study shows the importance of keeping an escape tool on hand, but it also demonstrates how critical it is for drivers to know what type of side window glass is on their vehicle – tempered or laminated. Motorists may not realize it, but an increasing number of new cars – in fact, 1 in 3 2018 vehicle models – have laminated side windows, a nearly unbreakable glass meant to lessen the chance of occupant ejection during a collision.

“To improve safety, more cars have laminated side windows – but a majority also have at least one window made of tempered glass,” said John Nielsen, managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair for AAA. “Our research found that generally vehicle escape tools can be effective in an emergency, but only if drivers know what type of side windows they have, otherwise they could waste precious seconds trying to break glass that will not shatter.” How to know the type of glass windows your car has

Finding out what type of glass side windows are made of is easy. Drivers should check for a label located in the bottom corner of the side window, which should clearly indicate whether the glass is tempered or laminated. If this information is not included or there is no label at all, AAA advises contacting the vehicle manufacturer. It is also important to note that some vehicles are outfitted with different glass at varying locations in the car (e.g., tempered glass on rear side windows versus laminated on front side windows).

Being prepared in an emergency can greatly improve the chances of survival, especially if drivers and their passengers have become trapped in the vehicle. AAA strongly recommends drivers do the following: Do these three things to be ready in case of emergency

Prepare ahead of time: • Memorize the type of glass the vehicle windows are made of – tempered or laminated. If the car has at least one tempered window, this will be the best point of exit in an emergency. Also, remember – standard escape tools will not break laminated glass.
• Keep an escape tool in the car that the driver is comfortable using, has tested ahead of time and is easy to access. Spring-loaded tools often have a key chain. Drivers can also mount the tool to the dash or steering column to keep it in place during a collision.
• Plan an exit strategy ahead of time and communicate it to everyone in the car. This will help avoid confusion in an emergency, which could increase the time it takes to exit the vehicle. Also, have a backup plan in case an escape tool cannot be used or doesn’t work.
What to do if trapped in a vehicle

If trapped in a vehicle, remember there is a S-U-R-E way out: • Stay calm. While time is of the essence – work quickly and cautiously to ensure everyone safely exits the vehicle.
Unbuckle seat belts and check to see that everyone is ready to leave the car when it’s time.
Roll down or break a window – remember if the car is sinking in water, once the window is open the water will rush into the car at a faster rate. If the window will not open and the car has tempered glass, use an escape tool to break a side window to escape. Drivers should also remember that if the vehicle is submerged:
o If a window will not open or cannot be broken because it is laminated, everyone should move to the back of the vehicle or wherever an air pocket is located. Stay with it until all of the air has left the vehicle. Once this happens, the pressure should equalize, allowing occupants to open a door and escape.
o A hammer-style escape tool (as opposed to a spring-loaded-style) could be much harder to swing underwater.
Exit the vehicle quickly and move everyone to safety.
• Call 911 – while this is typically the first step in an emergency, if a vehicle has hit the water or is on fire, it is best to try to escape first.

“Knowledge is power and the more drivers understand about their car – like what type of glass their side windows are made of – the better prepared they will be in the event of an emergency,” added Nielsen.

Could Summer Heat Lead to an Auto Meltdown?

More vehicles break down in summer than any other season. Here, the four most common culprits—and how to prevent them.

Dead Battery

Why it happens: Summer heat is harder on a car battery than the frigid cold of winter.
How to prevent it: If your car struggles to start, contact AAA to request AAA Mobile Battery Service (available in most areas). A technician will test your battery and, if necessary, sell you a new one and install it on the spot. Many AAA Approved Auto Repair locations also provide battery services. Plus, members save at every visit: Get a 10% discount on labor (up to $50) and repairs also come with a 24-month/24,000-mile guarantee on parts and labor.
Roadside requests: Nationwide, AAA helped nearly 6.5 million members with battery-related issues—about 23 percent of its roadside assistance calls in 2016.

Flat Tire

Why it happens: Tire temperatures soar on hot summer roads, putting underinflated and worn tires at a greater risk of a blowout.
How to prevent it: Once a month, check tire pressure*, measure tread depth and look for uneven wear. See the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure (on a sticker in the door jamb and in the owner’s manual).*

Overheated Engine

Why it happens: Automobile engines work extra hard in the summer, and among the many reasons they overheat is one you can spot ahead of time: coolant that is contaminated or running low.
How to prevent it: Check the coolant level, and watch for colored, sweet-smelling puddles under the car.
Tip: If your engine overheats, pull off the road as soon as possible, turn off the engine. Don’t open the hood—and never remove the radiator cap.

Out of Gas

Why it happens: Drivers often simply forget to check the fuel gauge or purposely drive until it’s near empty. Tip: Keep ample gas in the tank to keep the electric fuel pump cool; you risk damaging the pump by letting gas run low.
How to prevent it: Check the fuel gauge each time you start your car. When it shows a quarter tank, it’s time to head to a nearby gas station.

*Please note that the tire pressure PSI (pounds per square inch) molded on a tire sidewall is its maximum PSI.

Don’t Let the Check Engine Light Turn You Off From Making Needed Repairs

The top 10 check engine light repairs from the annual CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ reinforces what the Car Care Council has been saying for years. Motorists who ignore the check engine light get less miles per gallon and could face costly repairs down the road.

“Many people fear that when the check engine light comes on, it is going to mean several hundred or more dollars in repairs, so they ignore the light and hope the problem goes away,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Data from CarMD makes it clear that not addressing the cause of an illuminated check engine light can cost you in terms of wasted fuel and more expensive repairs in the future.”

When the check engine light is illuminated, it usually means that the vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly, even if the vehicle appears to be running normally. The top 10 most common check engine light repairs as reported by the recently released CarMD Vehicle Health Index are as follows.

  1. Replace O2 sensor(s)
  2. Replace ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s)
  3. Replace catalytic converter
  4. Inspect fuel cap and tighten or replace as necessary
  5. Replace evaporative emissions (EVAP) purge control valve
  6. Replace mass airflow (MAF) sensor
  7. Replace ignition coil(s)
  8. Replace evaporative emissions (EVAP) purge solenoid
  9. Replace fuel injector(s)
  10. Replace thermostat

“Following a recommended maintenance schedule and addressing small problems before they become bigger ones will help extend the life of your car and minimize check engine related repairs,” continued White. “It’s important to note that most of the common check engine problems negatively impact a car’s fuel economy and become more costly to repair if service is delayed.”

The Car Care Council’s popular Car Care Guide features helpful information about the check engine light. Available in English and Spanish, a printed copy of the 80-page Car Care Guide can be ordered free-of-charge by visiting www.carcare.org/car-care-guide.

Pricing Announced for New 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
Pricing Announced for New 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Ram Truck today announced pricing for the 2020 Ram 1500 powered by the new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $36,890 for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD, plus $1,695 destination.

The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, or $3,000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 eTorque ($3,300 on Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel and Laramie base models).

“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel offers the best torque and towing among all half-ton diesel trucks,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “Now with a 10-year track record, the Ram brand has emerged as a truck powertrain technology leader. Overall, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has outstanding pick-up truck capability and is truly in a class of its own.”

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available across all models and configurations, including a first-time offering in the Ram Rebel.

The Ram 1500’s all-new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel leads the half-ton pickup truck segment in torque with 480 lb.-ft. and diesel towing capability of 12,560 pounds.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is also offered with the second-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. Pricing for the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel (Crew Cab 4×2) starts at $39,140, plus destination.

Fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to when trucks go on sale early in the fourth quarter of this year.

All-new EcoDiesel engine
The third generation of the turbocharged EcoDiesel V-6 delivers increased torque and horsepower, along with superb fuel economy and minimal levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to meet the needs of Ram 1500 owners.

In the 2020 Ram 1500, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is rated at a best-in-class 480 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm, a 14 percent increase from the previous-generation EcoDiesel V-6, which peaks 400 rpm earlier. Horsepower increases 8 percent to 260 hp at 3,600 rpm.

Several significant changes contribute to the new EcoDiesel’s improved dynamic and fuel economy performance.

  • A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry is more efficient and provides improved response as engine rpms rise and fall
  • Redesigned intake ports to improve engine performance and fuel economy
  • Introduction of a dual, high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, a first for a diesel engine in North America. The EcoDiesel’s existing high-pressure EGR, with cooling exhaust gases drawn from the exhaust manifold, is augmented with a low-pressure EGR system that draws exhaust gases after they exit the diesel particulate filter. The addition of cooler, low-pressure exhaust gas makes a significant contribution to improved fuel economy and lower oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
  • The compression ratio is changed to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1, which helps reduce exhaust emissions, particularly NOx
  • Redesigned high-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles
  • Combustion chamber geometry optimized to improve fuel economy
  • Redesigned aluminum-alloy pistons improve fuel economy. The redesigned pistons use thinner piston rings and coating on the side skits to reduce friction
  • The piston pin is offset 0.3 degrees from the centerline to reduce “piston slap” against the cylinder wall, minimizing NVH
  • The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a sandwiched polymer/metal material to reduce NVH
  • The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is 50 percent larger and incorporates a new-generation diesel oxidation catalyst with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system to reduce NOx
  • New-generation brake system vacuum pump with low-friction blades contributes to improved fuel economy

The upgrades build on the EcoDiesel V-6’s attributes and performance that made it a winner of Wards 10 Best Engines award for three consecutive years.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 uses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The block is cast with compacted graphite iron, which provides strength to dampen vibrations, but weighs less than grey cast iron. A compacted graphite iron bedplate adds rigidity to the block.

The EcoDiesel V-6 uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods for strength and durability. The aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads use individual bearing caps to reduce friction and minimize NVH. The chain-driven overhead camshafts employ roller-finger followers.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is produced at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy.

Dodge is continuing to push the boundaries of performance, introducing the most powerful Charger ever – the 717-horsepower 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition – raising the performance bar even higher with the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world.

Fifty years ago, Dodge launched the infamous Dodge Charger Daytona model with its huge wing and massive nose specifically designed to dominate in NASCAR racing. The Daytona prototype was the first car to break 200 miles per hour (mph) average lap speed and set a record that stood for 17 years. Coveted by collectors ever since, only 501 copies of the 1969 model were produced – the minimum number required to qualify for use on the NASCAR circuit.

Today, Dodge salutes its high horsepower heritage with the new 717-horsepower 2020 Dodge Charger Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition. Its design, attitude and the limited-production numbers all pay tribute to the original record-setting Daytona. A unique “Daytona” decklid, rear-quarter decal with matching spoiler and Daytona-exclusive B5 Blue paint are throwbacks to the original. Like the legendary 1969 Daytona, production of the Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition is limited to 501 units.

“The Dodge brand continues to push the boundaries of performance with the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world, the Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody,” said Tim Kuniskis, Global Head of Alfa Romeo and Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “Today, with the introduction of the limited-production Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona, we are both recognizing the Dodge brand’s performance heritage and staying true to our roots by offering high-performance, collectible vehicles that continue to defy the trends and deliver attainable performance that can’t be found anywhere else.”

Performance enthusiasts can check out the new 2020 Dodge Charger Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition this weekend during the annual Woodward Dream Cruise. Dodge will display the new Daytona Edition, along with the new 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody, the 797-horsepower 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye and much more, on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 50881 Woodward Ave., between Orchard Lake and Pike streets, in Pontiac, Michigan.

New 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition
Created in 1969 as a 501-unit, purpose-built production run to qualify for NASCAR racing, the Charger Daytona set records with its distinct aerodynamic styling and legendary HEMI® power. The new Charger Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition builds on this celebrated history by adding more performance to North America’s only four-door muscle sedan.

Building on this legacy, the Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody is the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world, adding 3.5 inches of width with wider wheels and tires that are unmistakably Dodge//SRT, creating an aggressive, planted stance unlike any other four-door sedan on the market. The Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition ups the ante by increasing the shift points to 6,100 rpm in automatic mode, which yields a 10-horsepower boost from 707 to 717 exclusive to this model.

The Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition adds unique heritage appointments that give Dodge enthusiasts another way to display legendary Dodge performance attitude. The new 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition is available in four exterior paint colors – B5 Blue, Pitch Black, Triple Nickel and White Knuckle, with B5 Blue exclusive to the Daytona Edition.

Dodge designers reached back into the Daytona’s storied past to create cues for the 50th Anniversary Edition, including “Daytona” decklid to rear-quarter decal with matching spoiler. The “Daytona” decal, spoiler and Hellcat badge are white on B5 Blue, Pitch Black and Triple Nickel models. On White Knuckle models, the “Daytona” decal and spoiler are Blue and the Hellcat badge has a bright finish.

Completing the athletic look are 20- by 11-inch “Warp Speed” wheels with a unique Satin Carbon finish, Pirelli 305/35ZR20 all-season performance tires (three-season tires are optional) and ultra-high performance Black Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes with vented rotors.

Race-inspired interior features carbon fiber and unique Daytona blue accent stitching
Daytona cues are also seamlessly integrated into the interior with unique black heated and ventilated Nappa leather and Alcantara suede performance seats with blue accent stitching and “Daytona” embroidered seat backs. Both driver and front passenger seats feature 12-way power adjust function. The blue accent stitch appears throughout the interior, on the center console armrest, door panels and armrest, dashboard and shifter.

A Dynamica Suede headliner, real carbon fiber instrument panel (IP) and console bezels and Light Black Chrome interior accents are paired to the suede flat-bottom steering wheel, which features dual blue and silver accent stitching. Premium velour-bound floor mats have a blue dual-stitched accent border. Both the steering wheel and floor mats are exclusive to the Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition.

A custom IP badge with the Hellcat and Daytona logos is located on the passenger side identifying each vehicle as “x out of 501.”

Dealer orders for 2020 Dodge Charger models, including Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition, open in fall 2019; vehicles will start arriving in Dodge//SRT dealerships in early 2020.
