Confirmed: new Jeep plant for Detroit

A large new Jeep assembly plant is going to be built on the current site of the Mack Avenue engine complex.

Some time ago, Allpar pioneered the story, based on inside sources. Today, it’s official. FCA North America chief operating officer Mark Stewart issued a brief statement, thanking the support of the governor, state development authority, and the city of Detroit. ”I am pleased to confirm that plans to invest in our Jefferson North Assembly Plant and build a new state-of-the-art assembly plant in Detroit have been given the green light.”

He added, “At FCA, we are continuing to build a secure future, not only for our Company but also for the communities in which we operate. This investment enables us to deliver on this promise in the state and city we call home.”

This particular area is not just part of Detroit; it’s also close to the historic site of some Chrysler offices and a glitzy showroom, in what used to be a quite fashionable neighborhood. Today, though it’s a good drive down straight roads from major highways, the area has  several Chrysler plants in an otherwise nondescript neighborhood. That includes the two Macks, the Jefferson Avenue plant (which makes Grand Cherokees and Durangos), and the former Champion spark plug and Viper plant on Conner Avenue, as well as a small airport.

Because of the size of the new plant, FCA required land belonging to other parties, which the city has acquired. FCA’s statement is the first proof that the City of Detroit has acquired all the needed land.

Once Fiat gained control of Chrysler, the company started making massive investments in the Michigan/Ohio/Ontario area, bringing parts formerly made by suppliers in Mexico and China to its own  regional plants.

David Zatz founded Allpar in 1998 (based on a site he had begun in 1993-94), after years of writing reviews for retail trades. He has been quoted by the New York Times, Daily Telegraph, Detroit News, and USA Today; and he literally wrote the book on minivans.

Before making Allpar a full-time career, he was a consultant in organizational psychology, leading to his research and change and Mac statistics software sites. You can reach him by using our contact form.
