Jeep J-6: should the Gladiator go two-door?

Jeep finally came out with the pickup truck enthusiasts have wanted for over a decade—the Jeep Gladiator. But what about a more traditional take on it—one with just two doors?

The Jeep J-6 has been setting social media buzzing. Is this a test to see if a two-door Jeep pickup would be popular? A leftover prototype from earlier Gladiator plans? Or, as Jeep implies, a brand new retromod pickup “mixing the classic Jeep truck styling of the late 1970s with prototype and production Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar”?

The tailgate shows Jeep’s classic, postwar logo, albeit without the quotation marks; but that’s among the smallest of the changes. The J6 is based on the Rubicon (Jeep didn’t say whether that was Wrangler or Gladiator Rubicon); going to two doors allowed the bed to be twelve inches longer than standard, while keeping the  wheelbase of the Wrangler four-door and a length of 201 inches. The brilliant blue paint is an homage to the 1978 Jeep Honcho.

The bed is protected by a prototype body-color spray-in bedliner; the roll bar, which may see production, carries a set of four Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) LEDs of 4,800 lumens each, and a spare, which may also be made, can store tires up to 37 inches. The beadlock 17” wheels  have a Brass Monkey finish and silver beadlock ring; the two-inch lift kit works with 37 inch tires. All these parts are JPP prototypes.

Other modifications, again JPP prototypes, are a two-inch steel stinger bar that bolts to the Rubicon front bumper, rock rails  with two-inch steel tubes welded to the standard Jeep Gladiator rails, and a removable hardtop. Classic Jeep J6 badging was swapped in.

The stinger bar has four additional five-inch JPP LED lights, with another two bolted on near the A-pillars, for a total of 10 five-inch LEDs. The grille is custom Mopar Satin Black, and the stock Jeep Gladiator Rubicon hood is accented with Mopar hood latches with the Jeep logo. The 3.6-liter engine has a JPP cold-air intake.

Inside, instrument panel inserts match the body color;  leather seats and armrests have body-color blue stitching. The horn pad has a classic Jeep badge. The auxiliary switch bank offers a central operating location for the 10 LED lights, and the trailer brake control switch showcases the ability to tap into additional stopping power when towing. A bright pedal kit, all-weather floor mats, and molded doorsill guards round out the lineup of Mopar accessories.
